 Skardu City, Baltistan

The history of Skardu City dates back to the first half of the 16th century. Mirza Haidar wrote about it in his 16th-century text Tarikh-i-Rashidi Baltistan, and a century later, French traveler Francois Bernier mentioned it as Eskerdou. The region soon became included on Asian maps, first referred to as Eskerdow in Nicolaes Visscher II's 1703 map of India oriental nec non insularum.

The town of Skardu was established around 1500, along the Indus River. The city lies on the Indus River, which enters the broad valley at its confluence with the Shigar River. The area's first mosque dates back to the 6th century. In the city, the Manthal Buddha Rock, dating from the Buddhist era, is an impressive landmark. While visiting Skardu, make sure to take the time to admire the city's many religious and cultural symbols, including the ancient statue of Lord Buddha.

While traveling to Skardu, be prepared for some challenging terrain. A reliable 4x4 vehicle is essential, as the distance between Skardu and Islamabad is 637 KM. Before setting out, it is best to plan your transits and overnight stays in advance to make the most of your time. The scenery is absolutely magnificent. Skardu is located in a valley carved by glaciers. Nearby is the Baltoro Glacier, one of the largest outside the polar region. Shigar Valley contains the Main Karokoram Thrust, which separates the Asian plate from the southern volcanic clastic rocks. The sand dunes in Skardu are covered in snow during the winter. And in summer, Skardu is home to wild horses and other wildlife.

The city's main lake, Satpara Lake, is only 6 miles from Skardu. The dam is currently being built. The project was funded by the Federal Government, which allocated $10 million. Once completed, the dam will be the primary source of water for Skardu. The latest powerhouse unit, completed in 2011, is scheduled to be operational by June 2013.

The city enjoys a mild climate despite its remote location in a mountainous region. Its summer temperatures can reach 30 degC, while winters can drop to -12 degC. But the climate in Skardu is moderated by its mountainous setting, making it an ideal destination for travellers. The lowest recorded temperature in Skardu was -24.1 degC on 7 January 1995, and it can reach as low as -8 degrees Celsius during the winter.

A half-day fishing trip in the Sadpara Lake is a great way to enjoy the region's natural beauty. The hike will take you above Skardu City, offering a spectacular panoramic view of the region. You can also stop for a picnic lunch in the picturesque town of Khaplu. During the winter months, you can hike to the 8,000-metre-high Saif ul Maluk. Once you have hiked the mountain, you'll be back in Skardu by early morning.
